Guru Purnima, on the full moon of Ashadha, honours teachers and spiritual guides. It is also called Vyasa Purnima, the birthday of Maharishi Ved Vyasa, who arranged the Vedas and composed the Mahabharata.
Ved Vyasa, the teacher of teachers
On an island in the river Yamuna, on a full-moon day, a baby was born to the sage Parashar and Satyavati, a ferryman's daughter. Because he was dark and born on an island, he was called Krishna Dvaipayana. Even as a child he wished to devote his life to learning, and he grew into one of the greatest sages India has known. In those days the Vedas were one vast, unwieldy body of knowledge, and people found it hard to learn. With great care he divided them into four, the Rig, Yajur, Sama and Atharva Vedas, and taught each one to a disciple so it would be passed on faithfully. For this he became known as Ved Vyasa, the one who arranged the Vedas. He then composed the Mahabharata, with the Bhagavad Gita at its heart, and the Puranas, putting deep wisdom into stories that ordinary people could enjoy and understand. Lord Ganesha himself, it is said, wrote the Mahabharata down as Vyasa recited it. His disciples began to honour him on his birthday, and it became the day to thank every guru. Whether your guru is a spiritual teacher, a schoolteacher, a parent or a mentor, today is the day to say thank you.
