Govardhan Puja, the day after Diwali (Kartik Shukla Pratipada), remembers Krishna lifting Govardhan hill to shelter the people of Braj. Families offer Annakoot, a mountain of food, to Krishna; in Gujarat this day is also the new year, and in Maharashtra and Karnataka it is Bali Pratipada.
The little finger that held a mountain
Every year the people of Vrindavan prepared a grand offering for Indra, the king of the gods, who sent the rains. Young Krishna asked his father Nand why they worshipped Indra. Their cows grazed on Govardhan hill, he said, and its streams and grass fed their families, so wouldn't it be better to thank the hill, the cows and nature that cared for them every day? The villagers agreed and offered their feast to Govardhan instead. Indra was furious at being ignored, and he sent terrible storms. Rain poured down for days, the wind howled and the village began to flood. Frightened, everyone ran to Krishna. Smiling calmly, he lifted the whole of Govardhan hill on the little finger of his left hand and held it up like a giant umbrella. All the people, cows and animals took shelter beneath it. For seven days and nights Krishna held the mountain without tiring, until Indra realised his mistake, stopped the rain and came to ask forgiveness. Krishna forgave him gently. To celebrate, the people offered Krishna a mountain of dishes, the first Annakoot. The story teaches us to be grateful for the land, water and animals that sustain us, and to meet pride with calm.
