Dussehra, or Vijayadashami, on the tenth day of the bright half of Ashwin, celebrates the victory of good over evil: Lord Ram's victory over Ravana and Maa Durga's victory over Mahishasura. In the North, Ravana effigies are burnt after Ramlila; in Bengal it is Vijaya Dashami, when Durga idols are immersed; in Mysuru it is a royal festival.
Ram's victory at Lanka
Ravana, the learned and powerful king of Lanka, carried Sita away to his golden city while Ram and Lakshman were away. Ram, heartbroken, searched everywhere until Hanuman found her in the Ashoka grove. With the help of Sugriv's vanara army, Ram built a bridge of floating stones across the sea and reached Lanka. Before fighting, he sent Angad with a message of peace, asking only for Sita's return, but Ravana's pride would not let him agree. A great battle followed. One by one, Ravana's mighty warriors fell, including his brother Kumbhakarna and son Meghnad. Finally Ram faced Ravana himself. Each time Ram cut off one of Ravana's heads, another grew back. Then Vibhishan, Ravana's brother who had joined Ram, told him that Ravana's life force was hidden in his navel. Ram prayed, released a divine arrow, and on the tenth day of Ashwin, Ravana fell. Ram then honoured Ravana's learning and asked Lakshman to learn from him before he passed. Sita was freed, and good had won. When we burn Ravana's effigy, we are asked to burn our own ten faults too: pride, anger, greed, envy and the rest, and to keep the learning and leave the arrogance.
