Durga Ashtami (Maha Ashtami), the eighth day of Sharad Navratri, honours Maa Mahagauri and is one of the most important days of the festival. Many families do Kanya Puja, honouring young girls as forms of the goddess; in Bengal it is the heart of Durga Puja, with the Sandhi Puja at the meeting of Ashtami and Navami.
How Parvati became Mahagauri
To win Lord Shiva as her husband, Parvati went into the forest and did tapasya for many, many years. She lived through scorching summers, freezing winters and endless rains, sitting in meditation without moving. Over the years her body became covered in dust, soil and the soot of the forest fires, until she looked almost dark as the earth itself. When Shiva finally appeared, pleased by her devotion, he lovingly poured the pure waters of the Ganga over her. As the dust washed away, she shone with a brilliant, gentle light, as bright as the moon and as clear as a conch shell. She was called Mahagauri, the greatly radiant one. She is shown dressed in white, riding a white bull, with one hand offering blessings and the other removing fear. On the eighth day of Navratri, devotees pray to her for a clear mind and a peaceful heart. Many homes invite little girls, usually nine, along with a little boy as Langur or Bhairav, wash their feet, feed them puri, chana and halwa, and give them small gifts. In honouring these girls, we honour the goddess who lives in every daughter.
