Diwali, on the new moon (Amavasya) of Kartik, is the festival of lights. It celebrates Lord Ram's return to Ayodhya after fourteen years of exile and is the main night of Lakshmi Puja; in South India the day before is celebrated as Naraka Chaturdashi, and in Bengal and Assam this night is Kali Puja.
The night Ayodhya lit its lamps
For fourteen long years Lord Ram lived in the forest with Sita and Lakshman, keeping his father's word. In that time Sita was carried away by Ravana, and Ram, with Hanuman and the vanara army, crossed the sea and won her back. Meanwhile in Ayodhya, his brother Bharat had refused to sit on the throne. He placed Ram's wooden sandals on it and ruled as a humble caretaker, counting the days. When at last the fourteen years ended, Ram, Sita and Lakshman flew home in the Pushpak Vimana. It was the darkest night of the month, a new moon, and the people of Ayodhya were so overjoyed that they lit lamps on every rooftop, wall and window to light the way home for their beloved prince. The whole city glowed. Bharat ran out to embrace his brother, mothers wept with joy and the streets filled with music and sweets. Diwali is also the night when Maa Lakshmi, who rose from the churning of the ocean, is welcomed into clean, bright, open homes. So we light diyas, make rangoli, open the doors, and pray for light to drive away darkness, inside our homes and inside our hearts.
