Dhanteras, on the thirteenth day of the dark half of Kartik, begins the five days of Diwali. It honours Lord Dhanvantari, the divine physician who rose from the ocean with the pot of amrit, along with Maa Lakshmi, Kuber and Yamaraj, for whom a lamp is lit at the door.
The lamp that lit the doorway
When the gods and asuras churned the great ocean of milk in search of amrit, many treasures came up from the waves. On the thirteenth day of the dark fortnight, Lord Dhanvantari rose from the ocean, holding a golden pot of amrit and a book of healing. He became the divine physician and the father of Ayurveda, and so this day is also remembered as a day to pray for good health, the greatest wealth of all. There is another loving story for this evening. A king named Hima had a son whose stars warned of danger on the fourth night after his marriage. His young bride was determined to keep him safe. That night she would not let him sleep. She piled her gold and silver jewellery at the doorway, lit lamps all around until the room glowed, and sat telling him stories and singing songs. When Yamaraj arrived in the form of a serpent, he was so dazzled by the shining lamps and gold that he could not enter. He sat on the heap, listening to her songs all night, and at dawn he quietly went away. Ever since, families light a lamp facing south at the door on Dhanteras, the Yam Deepam, praying for the wellbeing of the whole household.
