Devshayani Ekadashi, on the eleventh day of the bright half of Ashadha, is when Lord Vishnu is said to enter his four-month yogic sleep on the cosmic serpent Shesh Naag. It begins Chaturmas, a season of prayer and simple living, and is also called Ashadhi or Padma Ekadashi; in Maharashtra it is the day of the great Pandharpur wari to Lord Vitthal.
King Mandhata and the return of the rains
Long ago, a good and truthful king named Mandhata ruled a happy kingdom. But once, for three years in a row, not a drop of rain fell. Crops failed, wells dried up and people suffered. The king was deeply troubled, because he could not think what wrong had been done. He went into the forest with a few companions to seek guidance and reached the ashram of the sage Angira, Brahma's son. The king bowed and asked how his people could be relieved. The sage listened kindly and advised him to observe the Ekadashi of the bright half of Ashadha, called Padma or Devshayani Ekadashi, with devotion, together with all his people, and to worship Lord Vishnu sincerely. The king returned and did just that. The whole kingdom fasted, prayed and remembered Vishnu with a pure heart. Soon the clouds gathered, the rain poured down and the fields turned green again. Joy returned to the land. This is also the day Vishnu goes to rest in the ocean of milk, until he wakes on Dev Uthani Ekadashi four months later. The story reminds us that when a community comes together in prayer and discipline, hope returns, just like the monsoon after a long, dry wait.
