Chaitra Navratri · Ugadi · Gudi Padwa 2027

In India (New Delhi): Wednesday, 7 April 2027. Dates for other cities below; abroad it can fall a day earlier.

Chaitra Shukla Pratipada begins the Hindu lunar new year and the nine nights of Chaitra Navratri, when Maa Durga's nine forms are worshipped. The same day is celebrated as Ugadi in Andhra, Telangana and Karnataka, and as Gudi Padwa in Maharashtra, Goa and Konkan.

When
Ghatasthapana in the morning of Pratipada, ideally in the first part of the day or at Abhijit muhurat around midday; check your city's panchang.
Fast
Many fast for all nine days or on the first and last days, eating fruit, milk and vrat foods such as kuttu, singhara or samak rice with sendha namak; if you are pregnant, unwell, elderly or diabetic, consult your doctor; a phalahar fast is fine.

The goddess and the buffalo demon, and the first morning of creation

Long ago a demon named Mahishasura received a boon that no man or god could defeat him. Proud of this, he drove the devas from heaven and spread fear everywhere. The gods went to Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva, and from their combined light, and the light of all the gods, a radiant goddess was born: Durga. Each god gave her a weapon, and she rode out on a lion. For nine days and nights she fought Mahishasura, who kept changing his form, and on the tenth day she defeated him. That is why her nine forms, from Shailaputri to Siddhidatri, are worshipped over nine nights. This same day is also remembered as the morning when Brahma began creation, which is why it is a new year for many communities. In the South, families eat Ugadi pachadi, a mix of neem, jaggery, tamarind, raw mango, salt and chilli, a reminder that the year will bring every kind of taste and we should accept them all calmly. In Maharashtra, a gudi, a pole topped with a bright cloth and an upturned pot, is raised at the doorway as a flag of victory and new beginnings, linked to Lord Ram's return to Ayodhya.

What you need

Puja, step by step

  1. Clean the home and puja area in the morning and bathe.
  2. Place Maa Durga's picture on a red cloth, facing east or north.
  3. Spread the soil, sow the barley seeds and sprinkle water (this is the jau that will sprout over nine days).
  4. Set the kalash on or beside the soil with mango leaves and the coconut on top; this is ghatasthapana.
  5. Light the diya, offer roli, akshat, red flowers and the chunri, and pray to Shailaputri, the first form.
  6. Read a chapter of the Durga Saptashati or the Durga Chalisa, or simply chant 'Om Dum Durgayai Namah'.
  7. Offer bhog and do aarti; repeat a short puja each morning and evening for nine days, honouring that day's form.
  8. If you celebrate Ugadi, prepare and share Ugadi pachadi and listen to the year's panchanga shravanam.
  9. If you celebrate Gudi Padwa, raise the gudi at the right side of the door or on the balcony and take it down before sunset.
  10. Keep the jau watered daily; the sprouts are offered on the last day.
