Srimad Bhagavatam · Skandha 11
Srimad Bhagavatam 11.8.44 meaning
asha hi paramam duhkham nairashyam paramam sukham
yatha sanchidya kantasham sukham sushvapa pingala
Hope is the greatest misery, and freedom from hope is the greatest happiness. That is why Pingala, cutting off her hope for a lover, slept in peace.
What it means
Here 'hope' means anxious waiting for someone or something outside to make us happy. Letting go of that restless expectation can bring a surprising, deep rest.
Spoken by Avadhuta.
