Ashtavakra Gita 18.40 meaning

kvatmano darshanam tasya yad drishtam avalambate dheeras tam tam na pashyanti pashyanty-atmanam avyayam

How can one who leans on what is seen ever see the Self? The wise do not look at this thing and that thing; they see the Self that never perishes.

What it means
We look for ourselves in roles, possessions and opinions, things that come and go. You cannot find the one who sees by staring at what is seen. Turn attention to the awareness itself.

Spoken by Ashtavakra.
