Valmiki Ramayana 2.57.6 meaning

kashchid amravanam chittva palashansh cha nishinchati pushpam drishtva phale gridhnuh sa shochati phalagame

Someone cuts down a mango grove and waters palasha trees instead. Tempted by their flowers and hoping for fruit, he grieves when the fruiting season comes.

What it means
Dasharatha compares himself to this man: he gave up Rama for a showy promise. Do not trade what truly nourishes you for something that only looks attractive.

Spoken by Dasharatha.
