Learning held by an arrogant, undisciplined person does not last long, like a necklace of gems tied around a monkey's neck.
What it means
Knowledge without humility gets wasted or thrown away, just as a monkey tears off a precious necklace. Respect for what you learn, and for those who teach you, is what lets knowledge stay and grow.
