shubham karoti kalyanam arogyam dhanasampada
shatrubuddhivinashaya deepajyotir namostu te
You bring what is good and auspicious, health, wealth and prosperity, and you destroy hostile thinking. O lamp-flame, I bow to you.
What it means
Children in many homes learn this at the evening lamp. Note what it destroys: not enemies, but enmity—hostile thoughts. The real light clears hatred from our own minds. How it helps in real life
- When you are angry: Still fuming about your neighbour's parking? While lighting the evening diya, wish him well once and watch the anger loosen its grip.
- As a parent: Your kids fought all day. At lamp time, have them say Shubham Karoti together, then hug each other before dinner.
