Chanakya Niti 10.12 meaning

varam vanam vyaghragajendra-sevitam drumalayah pakvaphal-ambusevanam trineshu shayya shatajeernavalkalam na bandhumadhye dhanaheenajeevanam

Better to live in a forest full of tigers and elephants, under a tree, eating fruit and drinking water, sleeping on grass in ragged bark, than to live penniless among your own relatives.

What it means
Depending on family when you have nothing can wound your self-respect deeply. Work toward financial independence, not out of pride, but so your relationships stay based on love rather than obligation.

Spoken by Chanakya.
