One has matted locks, one a shaved head, one has plucked out his hair, another wears saffron robes and many costumes. The fool sees, yet does not really see; all these disguises are just for filling the stomach.
What it means
Spiritual costumes do not make someone spiritual. Shankara warns against outward show, both in others and in ourselves. What matters is inner change, not the look.
Spoken by Adi Shankaracharya.
