Srimad Bhagavatam 8.19.39 meaning
satyam pushpaphalam vidyad atmavrikshasya geeyate
vrikshejeevati tan na syad anritam moolam atmanah
Truth is said to be the flower and fruit of the tree that is the self. If the tree is not alive, there can be no fruit. Untruth is the root of the self.
What it means
Shukra argues that a little untruth keeps life going, like a root. The story that follows shows Bali rejecting this, choosing his word over survival.
