Bhagavad Gita 11.53 meaning
naham vedair na tapasa na danena na chejyaya
shakya evanvidho drashtum drishtavan asi mam yatha
Not through the Vedas, nor through austerity, nor charity, nor sacrifice can I be seen in the way you have seen me.
What it means
Learning, discipline, giving and ritual all have value, but they are not enough by themselves. Something more personal is needed, as the next verse reveals. Practice must be joined with the heart. How it helps in real life
- Helping others: Writing a big cheque for the temple fund is good. This month, also sit with an elderly neighbour for an hour; the heart matters too.
- Studies & exams: You know every shloka by heart but feel nothing. Pick one line, read its meaning slowly, and think how it fits your week.
Spoken by Krishna.
