jay ganesh girija suvan, mangal mool sujan
जय गणेश गिरिजा सुवन, मंगल मूल सुजान।
Glory to Ganesha, son of Girija, the wise one and root of all that is auspicious.

kahat ayodhyadas tum, dehu abhay varadan
कहत अयोध्यादास तुम, देहु अभय वरदान॥
Ayodhyadas prays to you: grant me the blessing of fearlessness.

jay girija pati deen dayala
जय गिरिजा पति दीन दयाला।
Glory to the husband of Girija, who is kind to the humble,

sada karat santan pratipala
सदा करत सन्तन प्रतिपाला॥
and who always protects and cares for the saints.

bhal chandrama sohat neeke
भाल चन्द्रमा सोहत नीके।
The moon shines beautifully upon his forehead,

kanan kundal nagaphanee ke
कानन कुण्डल नागफनी के॥
and his earrings are made of hooded cobras.

ang gaur shir gang bahaye
अंग गौर शिर गंग बहाये।
His body is fair, and the Ganga flows from his head;

mundamal tan kshar lagae
मुण्डमाल तन क्षार लगाए॥
he wears a garland of skulls and smears his body with ash.

vastra khal baghambar sohe
वस्त्र खाल बाघम्बर सोहे।
A tiger skin looks splendid on him as his garment;

chavi ko dekhi nag man mohe
छवि को देखि नाग मन मोहे॥
even the serpents are enchanted by the sight of him.

maina matu kee hvai dularee
मैना मातु की ह्वै दुलारी।
The beloved daughter of Mother Maina, Goddess Parvati,

bam ang sohat chavi nyaree
बाम अंग सोहत छवि न्यारी॥
graces his left side with a beauty all her own.

kar trishool sohat chavi bharee
कर त्रिशूल सोहत छवि भारी।
The trident in his hand looks truly magnificent;

karat sada shatrun kshayakaree
करत सदा शत्रुन क्षयकारी॥
with it he always destroys his enemies.

nandi ganesh sohai tahan kaise
नन्दि गणेश सोहै तहँ कैसे।
Nandi and Ganesha look as beautiful beside him

sagar madhya kamal hain jaise
सागर मध्य कमल हैं जैसे॥
as lotuses blooming in the middle of the ocean.

kartik shyam aur ganaraoo
कार्तिक श्याम और गणराऊ।
Kartikeya, the dark one, and the lord of the ganas are there;

ya chavi ko kahi jat na kaoo
या छवि को कहि जात न काऊ॥
no one can put into words the beauty of this sight.

devan jabaheen jay pukara
देवन जबहीं जाय पुकारा।
Whenever the gods came to you and cried for help,

tab hee dukh prabhu ap nivara
तब ही दुख प्रभु आप निवारा॥
you, Lord, removed their suffering at once.

kiya upadrav tarak bharee
किया उपद्रव तारक भारी।
When the demon Tarak caused terrible havoc,

devan sab mili tumahin juharee
देवन सब मिलि तुमहिं जुहारी॥
all the gods came together and pleaded with you.

turat shadanan ap pathayau
तुरत षडानन आप पठायउ।
You quickly sent forth your six-faced son Kartikeya,

lavanimesh mahan mari girayau
लवनिमेष महँ मारि गिरायउ॥
who struck the demon down in the blink of an eye.

ap jalandhar asur sanhara
आप जलंधर असुर संहारा।
You yourself destroyed the demon Jalandhar,

suyash tumhar vidit sansara
सुयश तुम्हार विदित संसारा॥
and your glory is known throughout the whole world.

tripurasur san yuddha machaee
त्रिपुरासुर सन युद्ध मचाई।
You waged war against the demon Tripurasura

sabahin kripa kar leen bachaee
सबहिं कृपा कर लीन बचाई॥
and through your grace you saved everyone.

kiya tapahin bhageerath bharee
किया तपहिं भागीरथ भारी।
When King Bhagiratha performed long and intense penance,

purab pratijna tasu puraree
पुरब प्रतिज्ञा तासु पुरारी॥
you, destroyer of Tripura, fulfilled the promise made to him.

danin mahan tum sam kou naheen
दानिन महँ तुम सम कोउ नाहीं।
Among all givers, there is no one equal to you;

sevak stuti karat sadaheen
सेवक स्तुति करत सदाहीं॥
your servants sing your praises at all times.

ved nam mahima tav gaee
वेद नाम महिमा तव गाई।
The Vedas have sung the glory of your name,

akath anadi bhed nahin paee
अकथ अनादि भेद नहिं पाई॥
yet could not grasp your mystery, beyond words and without beginning.

prakatee udadhi manthan men jvala
प्रकटी उदधि मंथन में ज्वाला।
When the ocean was churned, a fiery poison rose up,

jarat surasur bhae vihala
जरत सुरासुर भए विहाला॥
and gods and demons alike were burning in distress.

keenhee daya tahan karee sahaee
कीन्ही दया तहं करी सहाई।
Out of compassion you came to their help then,

neelakantha tab nam kahaee
नीलकण्ठ तब नाम कहाई॥
and from then on you were called Neelkanth, the blue-throated one.

poojan ramachandra jab keenha
पूजन रामचन्द्र जब कीन्हा।
When Lord Ramachandra worshipped you with devotion,

jeet ke lank vibheeshan deenha
जीत के लंक विभीषण दीन्हा॥
he conquered Lanka and gave it to Vibhishana.

sahas kamal men ho rahe dharee
सहस कमल में हो रहे धारी।
As he was offering a thousand lotuses to you,

keenha pareeksha tabahin puraree
कीन्ह परीक्षा तबहिं पुरारी॥
you, Lord Shiva, chose that moment to test him.

ek kamal prabhu rakheu joee
एक कमल प्रभु राखेउ जोई।
When you, Lord, hid away one of the lotuses,

kamal nayan poojan chahan soee
कमल नयन पूजन चहं सोई॥
lotus-eyed Rama wished to offer his own eye in its place.

kathin bhakti dekhee prabhu shankar
कठिन भक्ति देखी प्रभु शंकर।
Seeing such intense devotion, Lord Shankar

bhae prasanna die ichchit var
भए प्रसन्न दिए इच्छित वर॥
was pleased and granted him the boon he wished for.

jay jay jay ananta avinashee
जय जय जय अनन्त अविनाशी।
Glory, glory, glory to the infinite and imperishable one,

karat kripa sab ke ghatavasee
करत कृपा सब के घटवासी॥
who lives in every heart and blesses everyone.

dushta sakal nit mohi satavai
दुष्ट सकल नित मोहि सतावै।
Wicked forces trouble me every single day;

bhramat rahaun mohi chain na avai
भ्रमत रहौं मोहि चैन न आवै॥
I keep wandering about and find no peace at all.

trahi trahi main nath pukaro
त्राहि त्राहि मैं नाथ पुकारो।
Save me, save me, O Lord, I cry out to you;

yehi avasar mohi an ubaro
येहि अवसर मोहि आन उबारो॥
come now, at this very moment, and rescue me.

lai trishool shatrun ko maro
लै त्रिशूल शत्रुन को मारो।
Take up your trident and strike down my enemies;

sankat se mohi an ubaro
संकट से मोहि आन उबारो॥
come and set me free from my troubles.

mata-pita bhrata sab hoee
मात-पिता भ्राता सब होई।
Mother, father and brothers may all be there,

sankat men poochat nahin koee
संकट में पूछत नहिं कोई॥
yet in times of trouble no one asks after me.

svamee ek hai as tumharee
स्वामी एक है आस तुम्हारी।
O Lord, you are my one and only hope;

ay harahu mam sankat bharee
आय हरहु मम संकट भारी॥
come and take away my heavy troubles.

dhan nirdhan ko det sada heen
धन निर्धन को देत सदा हीं।
You always give wealth to those who are poor;

jo koee janche so phal paheen
जो कोई जांचे सो फल पाहीं॥
whoever asks of you receives the reward they seek.

astuti kehi vidhi karain tumharee
अस्तुति केहि विधि करैं तुम्हारी।
How can we possibly praise you as you deserve?

kshamahu nath ab chook hamaree
क्षमहु नाथ अब चूक हमारी॥
Lord, please forgive us now for all our mistakes.

shankar ho sankat ke nashan
शंकर हो संकट के नाशन।
Shankar, you are the destroyer of all troubles,

mangal karan vighna vinashan
मंगल कारण विघ्न विनाशन॥
the source of all good and the remover of obstacles.

yogee yati muni dhyan lagavain
योगी यति मुनि ध्यान लगावैं।
Yogis, ascetics and sages meditate upon you;

sharad narad sheesh navavain
शारद नारद शीश नवावैं॥
Saraswati and Narada bow their heads before you.

namo namo jay namah shivay
नमो नमो जय नमः शिवाय।
I bow to you again and again; glory to you, Om Namah Shivaya.

sur brahmadik par na pay
सुर ब्रह्मादिक पार न पाय॥
Even the gods and Brahma cannot find the limits of your greatness.

jo yah path kare man laee
जो यह पाठ करे मन लाई।
Whoever recites this chalisa with a devoted heart

ta par hot hai shambhu sahaee
ता पर होत है शम्भु सहाई॥
receives the help and support of Lord Shambhu.

riniyan jo koee ho adhikaree
ऋनियां जो कोई हो अधिकारी।
Anyone who is weighed down by debts

path kare so pavan haree
पाठ करे सो पावन हारी॥
and recites this will be freed and made pure.

putra heen kar ichcha joee
पुत्र हीन कर इच्छा जोई।
Anyone without a son who wishes for one

nishchay shiv prasad tehi hoee
निश्चय शिव प्रसाद तेहि होई॥
will surely receive that gift through Shiva's grace.

pandit trayodashee ko lave
पण्डित त्रयोदशी को लावे।
On the thirteenth lunar day, invite a learned priest

dhyan poorvak hom karave
ध्यान पूर्वक होम करावे॥
and have a fire offering performed with full attention.

trayodashee vrat karai hamesha
त्रयोदशी व्रत करै हमेशा।
Whoever always keeps the fast on the thirteenth lunar day

take tan naheen rahai kalesha
ताके तन नहीं रहै कलेशा॥
will have no suffering left in their body.

dhoop deep naivedya chadhave
धूप दीप नैवेद्य चढ़ावे।
Offer incense, a lamp and food to the Lord,

shankar sammukh path sunave
शंकर सम्मुख पाठ सुनावे॥
and recite this aloud before Lord Shankar.

janma janma ke pap nasave
जन्म जन्म के पाप नसावे।
The sins of many lifetimes will be destroyed,

anta dham shivapur men pave
अन्त धाम शिवपुर में पावे॥
and in the end you will reach Shiva's own abode.

kahain ayodhyadas as tumharee
कहैं अयोध्यादास आस तुम्हारी।
Ayodhyadas says: Lord, you are my only hope;

jani sakal duhkh harahu hamaree
जानि सकल दुःख हरहु हमारी॥
knowing this, please take away all our sorrows.

nitta nem kar pratah hee, path karaun chaleesa
नित्त नेम कर प्रातः ही, पाठ करौं चालीसा।
Keeping a daily discipline, I recite this chalisa every morning.

tum meree manokamana, poorna karo jagadeesh
तुम मेरी मनोकामना, पूर्ण करो जगदीश॥
O Lord of the universe, please fulfil the wishes of my heart.

magasar chathi hemanta ritu, sanvat chausath jan
मगसर छठि हेमन्त ऋतु, संवत चौसठ जान।
Know that on the sixth of Margashirsha, in the winter season of Samvat sixty-four,

astuti chaleesa shivahi, poorna keen kalyan
अस्तुति चालीसा शिवहि, पूर्ण कीन कल्याण॥
this chalisa in praise of Shiva was completed for the good of all.
